Tuesday: DIY- SILHOUETTE ART

Tools and Materials
  • Camera
  • Exacto knife
  • Cardboard
  • Spray paint in gloss (color of your choice)
  • Newspaper
  • Fabric or decorative paper
  • Scissors
  • Iron (if using fabric)
  • Spray adhesive
  • Picture frame and mat (I used old frames and just spray painted them as well, but you could buy new, of course)

Steps
  1. Take several profiles pictures of your subject (I used our kids but you could do pets, too) at close range (so they almost fill the frame on the screen of your camera. Lighting doesn’t matter.
  2. Choose a picture frame size. This will dictate how large to print your photo. Choose the best profile from your photo shoot, then take the memory card from your camera to a photo-printing kiosk (like at Target or Wal-Mart) and print out a copy of the picture in the size you’ve chosen.  I chose an 11 x 13 frame with a mat for 8 x 10 pictures, so I printed the girls’ profiles out as 8 x 10s.
  3. Place the photo on a piece of cardboard (or a self-healing mat if you have one). Cut out the image with an Exacto knife, taking care to cut around details like wisps of hair.
  4. Lay the cut-out image on newspaper and spray paint it with high-gloss paint in the color of your choice.  Let dry.
  5. If you’re using an old frame, take this opportunity to spray paint that as well.
  6. If you’ve chosen to use fabric for the background of your silhouette, iron it.
  7. Cut the fabric or decorative paper to a size slightly larger than the opening of the picture mat.
  8. Coat the back of the painted image with a thin coat of spray adhesive and mount it to the fabric or decorative paper.
  9. Place all in the frame.

Wednesday:Kitchen Treats>Lets Bake-CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MARBLED SKILLET BROWNIE

INGREDIENTS
Brownie Batter:
  • ⅓ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup white sugar (or natural granulated sweetener to cut down on calories)
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour (or plain flour)
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
Cookie Dough:
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (or natural granulated sweetener)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ⅔ cup all-purpose flour (or plain four)
  • ⅛ teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch salt
  • ⅓ cup dark/semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat the oven to 175°C | 350°F. Lightly grease an 9-inch cast iron skillet or round baking pan with non-stick spray; line the base with parchment (or baking) paper; set aside
For The Brownie Batter:
  1. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the butter and sugars together well until the sugar has dissolved. Add the cocoa powder, whisking until dissolved and smooth.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla until well incorporated (about a minute). Fold the flour and salt through until the better is smooth and thick. Pour in the water and lightly mix it through until the batter is smooth (it will still be quite thick). Set aside.
For The Cookie Dough:
  1. In a separate medium-sized bowl, beat the butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla, beating until smooth. Add in the flour, baking soda and salt, folding the dry ingredients through until a cookie dough forms. Fold in half of the chocolate chips; set aside.
Assemble:
  1. Pour the brownie batter into the skillet (or pan) and spread out evenly with a spatula (or the back of a metal spoon). Scoop the cookie dough into the brownie batter; sprinkle with the remaining chocolate chips; and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cookie is golden and the edges are set and pulling away from the sides of the pan. Do not over bake or it will be dry instead of moist and fudge-like.
  2. Allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes and serve hot.
NOTES
If you don't own a cast iron skillet, you can bake this is a normal 9-inch baking pan!

Saturday: Life Hacks- 51 Fast Fixes for Clothing Catastrophes

Shrunken sweaters…..static cling…….deodorant marks……….scuffed shoes……I could go on an on about the endless list of wardrobe malfunctions and clothing catastrophes that cause us heartburn and frustration! Often we even end up tossing the offending object thinking it’s beyond repair. STOP! Take a deep breath and read this post first! :-) There’s almost ALWAYS a cure for what ails you and your clothing and today we’re sharing over FIFTY of them!

  • Remove grease stains with white chalk. Crush the chalk and sprinkle it on the grease stain. Let sit overnight. Then brush off in the morning. The chalk dust absorbs the grease from the fabric. I also love this method for getting rid of oily stains.
  • Chalk can also help remove ring-around-the-collar. Rub the stain heavily with white chalk. The chalk will absorb the oil that holds in the dirt. Allow to sit for at least 10 minutes, then wash as usual. If that doesn’t work give this trick a try.
  • If you have a zipper that’s just tough to pull up, slide a key chain run onto the loop of the zipper. Use the ring to pull the zipper up and then loop it around the button of your pants.
  • Check out this post to see my favorite method for getting rid of grass stains.
  • Rub a piece of sandpaper on the soles of new shoes to rough them up a bit. That way you have much better traction when walking!
  • If you scuff a black shoe, use a sharpie to color in the scuff.
  • This is a great post at 11 & Chic about how to remove salt stains from leather boots.
  • When your skirt decides to start clinging in all the wrong places…look for a wire hanger and run the long side of it over your skirt, and between your skirt and tights or slip. No more static cling!
  • Use mitten clips to create a kind of stirrup around your foot to keep pants from riding up under tall boots.

Friday: Beach fashion -15 Surprisingly Flattering One-Piece Swimsuits to Suit Every Body Type

There was a time when the one-piece was simply the stopgap of swimwear—pulled out in a pinch, perhaps post-baby or after a stint of not hitting the gym for a while. But in its newest iterations, the maillot isn’t simply a means to camouflage your winter body, it’s the chicest style you’ll find poolside, sur la plage, or anywhere else, for that matter.
Thanks to alluring upgrades such as high-rise, hip-baring cuts, spare keyhole details, and plunging scoop backs, these suits are serving up a sensibility that’s more Helmut Newton than matronly beachwear, in shapes to flatter every body type. Our advice for making the silhouette work? Keep it simple. Forgo fussy prints or over-the-top graphics, and opt for solid, mod stripes instead—or if you’re feeling especially cheeky, maybe a macro-gingham. Trust us: Even the most basic among these styles will speak volumes.

Thursday: Fitness -Beginner’s Guide: Paleo Diet For Weight Loss And Better Health

There are many diets out there that promise short term weight loss and enforce the idea of detoxing the body. However, dieting is not all about losing the pounds; It’s about creating an ongoing healthy eating habit that will benefit and prolong a better and healthier lifestyle.

Paleo diets are a good way to incorporate healthy, natural foods into daily life and promote steady and ongoing weight loss together with a regular exercise regime. Find out why taking up a Paleo diet will help you reap the benefits of weight loss and general overall health.
If you want to know more about weight loss, you can’t miss the following article that provides all useful tips you need:

What is a Paleo diet?

A Paleo diet, also referred to as the Caveman Diet, is based on the types of ingredients that early humans would have consumed. It’s promoting the notion of eating a ‘clean’ diet that is free of toxic foods that harm our body. In this day and age, food consumption rates have hit a major high and most of these foods contain trans fats, sugar and added preservatives that contribute towards diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and depression.
Paleo diets are based on well-sourced, healthy ingredients that avoid the unnecessary toxic foods that our bodies can’t process effectively or efficiently. Ingredients such as lean proteins that promote muscle strength, strong bones and a good immune system as well as satisfying the body for longer periods between meals are a big part of the Paleo diet.
Fruits and vegetables, that we know contain the nutrients, antioxidants and other health benefits that contribute to a healthy functioning body, make up a big portion of this type of diet. Healthy fats are also essential and are found in nuts, seeds, fish, lean meats, fruit such as avocados and healthy oils like olive and grapeseed oil. All these combine to form a healthy diet that promotes a happy and well-fueled body

What exactly are the health benefits of a Paleo diet?

I mentioned earlier that trans fats and sugar, in particular, contribute to diseases that are becoming the biggest killers today. There are so many health benefits from partaking in a Paleo diet and here is a brief run-down of just a few.
  • Reverses Diabetes: Studies have found that a long-term Paleo diet can actually reverse the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. Cutting out all processed foods that contain sugar may eliminate possible development of diabetes.
  • Lowers Chances of Cardiovascular Diseases: One of today’s biggest killers, cardiovascular disease sees big increases in heart attacks, strokes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and the symptoms that can stop people from being able to live their lives. Lowering our intake of processed foods containing trans fats lowers the risk of heart disease.
  • Promotes a Healthy Immune System: The best part of a Paleo diet is that it provides you with the most nutrient dense food options. Foods rich in vitamin A, D, C and zinc all go towards an efficient immune system, resulting in a lessened susceptibility to illness.
