Forensic Artists : Latest Case - Jolene Riendeau

Case Type: Missing From Home Missing Date: Monday 12th April 1999 Missing From: Pointe St. Charles Montreal  QuebecMissing Country: CanadaSex: FemaleDOB: 08/Aug/1988 Age Now: 21

The organization uses photographs of relatives who closely resemble a missing child and then incorporates other elements -for example, current trends in hairstyles -to create an image of how a person might appear years after he or she has disappeared.
Photos created by the centre's forensic artists have helped solve cases involving missing children in the United States.
Perhaps the centre's best-known work involved an image it produced of Jaycee Dugard, who disappeared at age 11 in 1991, in California.
When she was rescued 18 years later from the people who abducted her, observers were struck by how closely Dugard resembled an image the centre had created, based on what experts thought she would look like as a young adult.
In 2002, the centre created an image of Riendeau based on what forensic experts predicted she would look like at age 12.
"Many years have since gone by and we are without any news on Jolene," said Pina Arcamone, director general of the Missing Children's Network.
"We're hoping that by releasing this new photograph of Jolene, it will generate some new information that will allow us to finally bring closure to this case. It has been 11 unimaginable years for (her) family."
Despite chasing down tips at various points since she was last seen, Riendeau's disappearance remains one of the highest-profile unsolved missing persons' cases for the Montreal police.

Age-enhanced photo shows what Jolène Riendeau might look like today at age 22. Riendeau was 10 years old when she vanished in Point St. Charles in April 1999.

“Grim Sleeper” serial killer- In A Nut Shell

The "Grim Sleeper" did give some sleepless nights to the Los Angeles County. Being stated as one of the most startling cases to be solved; this case has opened avenues to be considered very seriously by the Forensic Officers.

The Preview: Grim Sleeper is the nickname for a serial killer in Los Angeles, California believed to be responsible for at least 11 murders and one attempted murder in Los Angeles since 1985. The attacker was dubbed the "Grim Sleeper" because he apparently took a 14-year hiatus from his crimes, from 1988 to 2002.

The Investigation and Arrest: Well the Wikipedia would give you more Information but in brief the investigation took 25years..with the arrest of Lonnie Franklin Jr., 57 The arrest was made on July7, 2010

What is gripping is the way he was caught! Heard of familial DNA??... Well if you haven't its the first Familial DNA Case- Familial coz it is the DNA of a very close RELATIVE!! YES..RELATIVE...NOT YOUR OWN..BUT YOUR CLOSEST RELATIVE...

The familial search in the Grim Sleeper case began at a lab of the state’s Bureau of Forensic Services in Richmond, Calif., where forensic scientists came up with a list of 200 partial DNA matches from a database that contains 1.3 million profiles.

To narrow down their list of 200, they analyzed the Y chromosome, the male sex-determining chromosome that is passed from father to son. One person, a man who had recently been convicted on a felony weapons charge, was an exact match to the Y chromosome of crime-scene DNA. Next, using corroborating information like birth certificates and Google mapping, researchers figured out that the matching person’s father would be a viable suspect.

But the advent of familial searches raises important questions that may be better answered with a more sweeping authority: national mandatory standards governing the method and appropriate use of the technique. But how might these technologies be mis-used in the future?

Help us Canada... o_O

Yes...once again it was proved that the "CBI" and "Forensic Officials" needed a major helping hand... After 2years of tireless efforts put in..Really?? I dont think so..

The murder case has its own lil Wikipedia: Noida double murder case

The Case dwindles on the evidence recovered... yes... I would pay a penny every time i hear that and i know i would be the Next Bill Gates...

Well wasn't the series of lie detector tests on her mom and dad enough...that they made it so convincing that her parents could be involved. Now..this comes from the same experts that claim that they after searching the crime scene find a body on the roof... - THE NEXT DAY!!

After 2 years of the hype and the narco tests and the shoddy investigation- yes"shoddy" - (*mentioned in wiki itself) the post mortem reports... they have finally got A SOLUTION!!!

"CBI seeks Canadian help in Aarushi case"

REASON: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought help from two Canadian forensic laboratories to crack the Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj Banjade murder case. The CBI has approached the Ontario Centre for Forensic Sciences, located in Toronto, and the Warnex Pro-DNA Services, Inc, based in Silver Bay, To test evidence using a new DNA technology that is not yet available in India.

WAIT REWIND: NEW DNA TECHNOLOGY!

“The Canadian laboratories managed to extract DNA of the victim from a T-shirt of one of the accused, domestic help Pradip Prabhakar Parab, even though it had been washed several times,” said a case investigator attached to CBI's Unit Two that had probed the case.

Why couldn't Our Forensic Lab do that... don't we extract DNA at Our Forensic labs?? Is it that Bad??

The Hindustan Times had, on May 23, reported the fact that CBI director Ashwani Kumar decided to take help of the technique, not available in India, to crack the case. (**Thank and Good Night)

R.I.P Aarushi.... May your soul rest in peace.

CRIME SCENE INSECTS

YES ITS CSI: CRIME SCENE INSECTS..

FROM BADLY DECOMPOSED BODY TO A FRESHLY DECOMPOSING CORPSE..THESE TINY LITTLE CREATURES TELL YOU ABOUT THE TIME OF DEATH AND THE BODY ITSELF...

Forensic entomology is a young subfield, which is the application of this science to medicolegal death investigations. Forensic Entomologists estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI)—the amount of time that passes after the death of the victim. These scientists use insects to make such determinations, as well as to help reveal the probable cause, location, and time of death. Forensic Entomologists are also able to glean other valuable information by studying the insects that live on dead bodies. For example, insect evidence can be used to:

• deduce if a body was disturbed or moved after death
• identify a body by analyzing the DNA of flesh consumed by insects
• determine whether a dead individual used drugs by analyzing accumulated toxins in the insects that fed on the body
• establish whether a suspect was present at the scene of a crime
• ascertain the presence or position of wounds in badly decomposed bodies

Forensic Entomologists have expertise about the life cycle of insects that feed on decomposing flesh. They know that certain insects eat specific parts of bodies at particular intervals. Insects also develop through their life phases from egg to larvae to pupae to adults within a constant timeframe according to each insect species.

Forensic Science IndiaAn Information Guide to Forensic Science

FORENSIC IN INDIA:

The application of science and technology to the detection and investigation of crime and administration of justice is not new to India. Although our ancestors did not know forensic science in its present form, scientific methods in one way or the other seem to have been followed in the investigation of crime. Its detailed reference is found in Kautilya’s ‘Arthashastra,’ which was written about 2300 years ago. Indians studied various patterns of the papillary lines, thousands of years ago. It is presumed that they knew about the persistency and individuality of fingerprints, which they used as signatures. Even Mr. KM Kata, a frequent contributor to ‘Nature’, stated that the Chinese records proved the use of fingerprints in an ancient kingdom of southern India. The Indians knew for long that the handprints, known as the Tarija’, were inimitable. The use of fingerprints as signatures by illiterate people in India, introduced centuries ago, was considered by some people as ceremonial only, till it was scientifically proved that identification from fingerprints was infallible.

Eligibility: To take up a bachelors degree you need to be from a bio background however due to the diversity many open field like maths, computers, are come in the forefront. For masters course in forensic science you need to be a graduate preferably with a first division in Physics, chemistry, zoology, botany, biochemistry, microbiology, B.pharm, BDS or applied science.

Job Prospects and Career options : One can find employment with law enforcement agencies, police, legal system and in the investigative services of the government and also private agencies. They can also work as teachers in institutes that conduct courses in this subject.

Remuneration : Remuneration for various state forensics departments would be as per government pay scales. The state department salaries begin around Rs. 4000

Institutes : Many Institutes offer Forensic Science Courses.
